How To Layer In Vintage To More Modern Homes

There’s something magical that happens when you bring a vintage piece into a modern home. Suddenly the room feels richer, warmer, like it has a story to tell. We love using vintage in our projects for the character and charm it adds, but also for the unexpected twist it gives to clean, modern design. It’s one of the easiest ways to create a home that feels collected, not curated.
Start with one Statement Vintage Piece

Not sure where to begin? Start with one standout item:
A distressed leather or reupholstered armchair - you can get really creative with patterns here!
A vintage rug with character
A weathered side table
A carved dining table or desk
Let this item be the star of the show and build around it. Be sure to keep the surrounding furniture more minimal in order to let it breathe!

Tip: If you’re not quite ready to commit to furniture, try vintage art or lighting first. These are easier to swap out as your style may evolve.
Stick to a Cohesive Color Palette

When you start to mix eras, color becomes your best friend. A consistent palette across both modern and vintage pieces helps everything feel more intentional.
Try pulling colors from your vintage item and repeating them elsewhere like in throw pillows, blankets, wall art, etc.

Tip: Soft neutrals, warm earthy tones and muted hues are great for blending vintage into a modern space.
Layer with Texture

Vintage pieces are often full of beautiful texture like worn wood, faded textiles, aged metals, and natural patinas. These textures tend to add richness and contrast to the sleek finishes often found in modern homes.Â

Try Mixing:
A vintage wood side table next to a modern sofa
An old ceramic lamp on a clean lined console
A faded rug on a polished concrete or hardwood floor
The contrast between new and old textures create visual depth and makes your space feel lived-in and layered.
