Austin kitchen remodel

Insights from the team at Living Oak Interior Design

At Living Oak Interior Design, one of the most frequent questions we receive from clients, especially those in the early planning stages, is about budget expectations for a kitchen remodel. Understandably so! The kitchen is the heart of the home, and whether you're updating a dated layout or taking on a full gut renovation, it’s a major investment. In Austin, remodel costs can vary widely depending on the scope, selections, and (sadly) even the neighborhood. But having a realistic idea of what to expect from the outset can help you plan with clarity and avoid costly surprises down the line.

For a light cosmetic refresh, such as repainting cabinets, updating hardware, replacing lighting, or adding a new backsplash, clients typically spend anywhere between $7,500 and $25,000. This kind of update can make a big impact, especially when the layout of the kitchen already functions well and the appliances are in good working order. Small changes in materials, colors, and finishes can breathe new life into a dated space.

A mid-range renovation, which might include semi-custom cabinetry, new countertops, energy-efficient appliances, updated flooring, and some minor layout adjustments, usually lands somewhere in the $30,000 to $75,000 range in Austin. This is a very common tier for our clients, especially families who want both an updated look and improved function without going fully custom.

For those interested in a high-end or luxury remodel, complete with custom cabinetry, premium surfaces like honed marble or quartzite, high-performance appliances, and a fully reimagined layout, costs can begin around $75,000 and stretch well past $150,000. In some cases, especially when structural changes are involved or square footage is being added, we’ve seen these types of projects reach the $200,000–$250,000 mark.

So where does the value of working with an interior designer come in?

There’s a common misconception that hiring a designer is an added expense, when in reality, a thoughtful and experienced designer can help protect your budget. At Living Oak, we not only help our clients define a realistic and comprehensive scope, but we also ensure that their dollars are spent wisely. Designers have access to trade-only sources, trusted local vendors, and preferred contractor relationships that can ultimately save both time and money. We know where to invest for maximum impact, whether that’s custom cabinetry or a show-stopping stone slab, and where you can source beautiful alternatives that don’t compromise on style.

We also streamline the process. When you have a clear design plan, written and full developed spec documents, materials selected in advance, and a project schedule in place, you avoid the kinds of delays and backtracking that quickly drive up labor costs. And because we understand how selections impact pricing, we’re able to guide you through design decisions that align with your goals without derailing your budget.

We always recommend that clients include a 10–20% contingency buffer for unexpected surprises, particularly in older homes where plumbing or electrical work might be necessary. Permitting, custom fabrication, and extended lead times can also influence the final number.

Every project is unique, but what remains consistent is our approach: designing kitchens that are both timeless and tailored, functional and beautiful. Whether your vision is a simple refresh or a full transformation, the right planning and the right partner makes all the difference.
